In the weeks prior to her mother’s death, while helping her sort through family odds and ends, Elaine comes across a blue cat’s-eye marble that she had clutched in her pocket long ago during Cordelia’s childhood attacks, and her past experience comes flooding back to her. It is one of my favorite books and I have read many. "A brilliant, three-dimensional mosaic...the story of Elaine's childhood is so real and heartbreaking you want to stand up in your seat and cheer." The whole book itself was fast-paced and rich. An exciting story with an excellent plot, great dialogue, and well developed, unique characters. During and after the battles, we see the characters personalities. While cleaning out the cellar, she finds her childhood cat’s eye marble, which unlocks her memories of the ravine incident from elementary school. Perhaps I missed something, but I felt it would have benefited from a twist of which there could have been several as the book built up.

There aren't too many writers who use actual battle terms. Her eyelids don’t flicker but there’s a faint twitching of her fingers, or do I imagine it?

Atwood is an absolute master of her craft and I can't recommend her highly enough.
